Resources for Finding Beginner Hiking Trails

Finding trails to hike can be a difficult task. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources for finding beginner hiking trails that are easy to access and offer good options for new hikers.

AllTrails is an online resource for hiking trails of all difficulty levels that offers an app and a website to help you find the best beginner hiking trails in your area. AllTrails offers free access to its hiking trail database and the ability to save, review, and share trail profiles. It also offers paid plans that allow more capabilities for experienced hikers like offline GPS tracking and access to offline trail maps for saved trails.

I’m less familiar with this website, but it seems to function similarly to AllTrails, with the exception that all the trail profiles are crowdsourced so the coverage of trails in some areas is more complete. Hiking Project allows downloading offline maps in its free plan, which would be useful for hikers looking to venture onto trails less traveled and less clearly marked and is backed by REI. The limitation I’ve found is that most of the trail profiles are concentrated in designated public lands like National Forests and Preserves, so if you don’t live near one of those, it may not be as helpful as AllTrails.
